LIFT BUYING GUIDE

Outdoor and External Lifts for Houses, Villas and Beach Homes

When an outdoor or external lift makes sense, what it is called, and what to check on weatherproofing, corrosion and maintenance.

Overview

Not every building has interior space for a lift, and not every family wants to give up living area to a new shaft. That is where an outdoor elevator comes in. An outdoor elevator or a set of outdoor home elevators attaches to the outside wall of the house, so nothing inside the home has to be demolished. You may also see the same idea described as an outdoor elevator lift, an outdoor platform lift or an external platform lift, and each phrase points to a lift that lives outside the building envelope.

One idea, many names

An external lift, an external elevator, an exterior elevator and an outside elevator all describe the same thing. Builders who are adding access to an older bungalow often ask for external lifts for houses, because a side or rear wall is easier to use than a crowded stairwell. Coastal homeowners ask about an outside elevator for beach house sites, where salt air, humidity and strong wind demand corrosion-resistant materials and a properly sealed cabin.

Where outdoor lifts make sense

Urban plots are often narrow, and a sidewalk elevator, a sky elevator or a city elevator can connect street level to upper terraces or rooftop areas. A car elevator moves vehicles between levels when there is no room for a ramp. Hillside homes, split-level plots and buildings with awkward internal layouts are all good candidates for external solutions.

What to check before you order

Weatherproofing is the first requirement: rain covers, sealed electrics and drainage. Corrosion protection matters next, especially near the sea. Then consider foundation strength, wall fixing points, cabin ventilation and how the lift behaves during a power cut. Always ask for the maintenance schedule too, since exposed equipment needs more frequent attention than an indoor installation.
